Literature: ‘Art in Cap and Bells: trompe l'œil masterpieces designed to cheat the eye by their astonishing effect of reality’, in The Illustrated London News, Christmas Number 1955, p. 25;
P. Gammelbo, ‘Cornelius Norbertus Gijsbrechts og Franciscus Gijsbrechts’, in Kunstmuseets aarsskrift, 1952–55, Copenhagen 1956, p. 153, no. 58.

Exhibited: Sheffield, Graves Art Gallery, The Eye Deceived, October 1954, no. 34.

Note: Franciscus Gysbrecht, born in Antwerp in 1649, was the son of still-life painter Cornelis Norbertus Gysbrechts (1630–1683). Mainly active in his hometown, he is also recorded as having worked in Leiden and alongside his father at the Danish court in Copenhagen. He specialised in painting trompe-l’œil still lifes, of which the present lot is a characteristic example. This elaborate composition depicts a wall cabinet overflowing with an array of objects, including pieces of writing equipment and gold coins, visible through half-open doors serving to create an illusion of depth. This effect is heightened by the masterful depiction of a piece of fabric hanging from one of the doors and covering part of the painted picture frame.
