Lot 3016. A large bronze figure of a horse, Han dynasty (206 BC-220 AD); h. 60 cm, w. 44 cm, with 4 X-rays. Lot sold: 945,000 HKD (Estimate: 150,000 - 250,000 HKD). © Sotheby's 2022

Provenance: Wong and Sons Art Gallery, New York, 1993.

Note: Large bronze figures of horses were particularly difficult to produce in a single mould, therefore craftsmen would have to cast the pieces separately and assemble them to form the horse. The labour and material costs would have been tremendous, indicating the immense wealth possessed by provincial landowners and officials. See a related massive bronze horse, formerly in the collection of Bruce Dayton and Ruth Stricker Dayton, now preserved in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, accession no. 2002.45.
