Bronze divine beast, Spring and Autumn period (770-475 BC), Eastern Zhou dynasty (770-221 BC)

09

Bronze divine beast, Spring and Autumn period (770-475 BC), Eastern Zhou dynasty (770-221 BC). Height 48 cm, length 47 cm, width 27 cm. Excavated from the Xujialing Chu tomb, Xichuan, Henan, 1990. Collection of the Henan Museum.

The entire vessel is composed of three similarly depicted divine beasts. The larger one has a dragon's head with six serpentine dragons as horns, a tiger's body, and a tortoise's foot, with its mouth open and its teeth sharpened. On the spine is a foot-deformed divine beast, also with a dragon's head and a tiger's body, with another similar divine beast in its mouth. The entire body is decorated with animal and cloud motifs, and the body is inlaid with turquoise. The beast is a rare object, with a treacherous image, beautifully crafted and finely inlaid with turquoise, which is extremely beautiful and luminous.

The vessel was unearthed in pairs. The four feet of the beast are flattened and curled to increase the support and stability of the vessel. It is assumed that the vessel would have been used as a frame for drums, chimes and other instruments that required suspension and support.
