Singing disconnected verses, I enjoy the pleasure of life in beautiful, secluded surroundings of high mountains and rivers,
With me are my old friend, the plum tree and an acquaintance, the crane.
This poem is commonly attributed to Nguyen Du during his mission to China in 1813. During this trip, Nguyen Du and other emissaries visited a porcelain workshop that produced export porcelain for the Vietnamese market. The owner of the workshop knew that Nguyen was a talented poet, so he invited Nguyen to compose few lines of poetry for a 'crane, rock, and prunus' decorated dish. Since then, the workshop produced this kind of dishes with this poem on it.
This poem is written in nôm a writing system ostensibly developed by the thirteen century scholar Nguyen Thuyen. It is vernacular script that uses Chinese characters to transcribe Vietnamese words.
