Longquan 'celadon' glaze bowl, Ming dynasty, ca. 1368-1450
Stoneware bowl decorated with incised scrolls under the glaze and covered with a green 'celadon' glaze, Ming dynasty, ca. 1368-1450. Longquan kilns, Zhejiang. Diameter: 30.2cm; Height: 13.0cm. Purchased from Robert Murdoch Smith, 1706-1876. Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
From the RICHARD collection, Iran.
Stoneware glazed vessels from Zhejiang formed the largest proportion of exports to the Middle East before 1400, but were also widely exported to the Philippines, Indonesia and mainland south-east Asia, where local potters emulated them. The first 'celadon' objects reached Europe from the Middle East; this bowl was acquired in Syria.
