Qianlong the deep U-shaped body rising from a short narrow foot to a flaring rim, finely and deeply carved around the exterior through the red lacquer layers to a black ground with eight lanca characters amidst leafy lotus strapwork panels and above a lotus-lappet band, the interior with a gilt-bronze liner. 13.5cm., 5 3/8 in. Mark and period of Yongle of compressed globular form delicately carved to reveal the layer of ochre-yellow lacquer beneath the cinnabar-red, the cover with a camellia blossom encircled by scrolling stems and smaller blooms and opening buds, the shallow sides of the box similarly decorated, the interior and base lacquered black, incised on the base with the six-character mark. 6.4 cm., 2 1/2 in.
