New Acquisitions 2016–18 on display at the Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze

FLORENCE - Cecilie Hollberg, Director of the Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze, is delighted to open the rich programme of events devised by the museum for 2019 with an exhibition entitled New Acquisitions 2016–18. The V&A and the Scottish National Gallery have jointly acquire sculpture by Lorenzo Bartolini

Lorenzo Bartolini, The Campbell Sisters Dancing a Waltz, c. 1821. LONDON.- Bartolini was a revolutionary and rebel sculptor, now considered to be one of the European greats. His style was distinct to that of his traditional neo-classical contemporaries as he sought to capture the ‘beauty of nature’ in his works. Bartolini’s bas-relief of Cleobis and Biton attracted the attention of the Napoleonic government and secured his fame as a sculptor. Five sculptures acquired by the Rijksmuseum from a donation from the Dutch Lottery

Lorenzo Bartolini, Caritas Educatrice, ca. 1842 AMSTERDAM.- Thanks to a donation from the Dutch lottery BankGiro Lottery, the Rijksmuseum has acquired five sculptures, all of which make an exceptional contribution to the Rijksmuseum’s international collection of sculptures. The exhibition gives an impression of the diversity of European sculpture over three centuries. The highlight of the exhibition is a life-sized Greyhound sculpture dating back to 1657.
