The Collection of the Late Lieutenant Colonel R.F.C. Gladwyn and the late Mrs R. Gladwyn Lt. Col. Gladwyn served in Korea from 1952 to 1953 and was then posted to Hong Kong, where he served from 1953 to 1955 and was joined there by his family. The collection of Chinese jade carvings and ceramics was formed during the stay in Hong Kong. He had an eye for detail and collected these works of art because he thought they were beautiful. Chine, dynastie Ming (1368-1644) de forme ch'iu, la surface sulptée en trois registres d'arabesques archaïsantes, phénix et dragons, une bande de motifs en spirale sous une frise formelle au bord, la crinière et les cornes d'un animal mythique formant la base du vase, deux perles enflammées de chaque côté, la pierre d'une belle teinte grise avec incrustations noires et rouille ; socle en bois. 22,2 cm, 8 3/4 in. A Fine Grey Jade Rhyton Cup. Late Ming Dynasty of deep hollowed U-shape, carved in low relief around the exterior with a geometric ruyi band, the base carved in high relief with a monster mask, the horns of the monster forming the lower part of the handle, the upper handle in the form of a large sinuous chilong, a smaller chilong clambers down the front of the vessel, the stone of pale grey tone with speckled lighter inclusions. 13.5cm., 5 3/8 in.
