Stem Cup, Period of Tibetan Empire, 7th–9th century, China (Xinjiang Autonomous Region, Central Asia). Gold with repoussé decoration. H. 3 1/2 in. (8.9 cm); Diam. of mouth 2 3/4 in. (7 cm). Purchase, 2001 Benefit Fund, 2002; 2002.19. © 2000–2016 The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The intertwined vine with its curled leaves is reminiscent of Sogdian imagery and motifs found in Gandharan Dionysian reliefs. The twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac are placed in rectangular frames beneath the cup rim.

Lot 921. A rare and unusual 'mirror black'-glazed stem cup, Yongzheng six-character mark in underglaze blue in a line and of the period  (1723-1735). Estimate USD 30,000 - USD 50,000. Photo Christie's Image Ltd 2016 The deep cup is raised on a wide pedestal foot, and is covered on the exterior with a deep black glaze that has very faint traces of gilt decoration depicting a dragon chasing a flaming pearl. A 600-year-old china Ming cup sold in Hong Kong by Auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull for £3.6 million

The Ming Xuande (1426-35) mark and period blue and white Stem Cup, sold in Hong Kong by Auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull for £3.6 million, was the most valuable of 270 items bequeathed to the Staffordshire University by Mr Ernest Thornhill on his death in 1944.
