A brown glass overlay snuff bottle. Yangzhou school, cyclically dated jiashen, corresponding to 1824
Of flattened rectangular form with gently rounded shoulders surmounted by a short cylindrical neck, resting on an oval foot, finely carved through the pale brown overlay with a scene of a figure fanning himself under a plantain tree, the reverse with a figure looking out at birds, the shoulders flanked by archaistic ring handles carved from the brown overlay, all against an opaque white ground, stopper. 6.3cm (2½in) (2).... Of flattened rectangular form rising from a short straight oval foot ring, finely carved through the layer of pale brown overlay to the opaque milky white glass, depicting a traveller riding a mule across a bridge, followed by an attendant, the reverse with a fisherman standing in a boat trying to sell his catch to an elderly gentleman seated on a pier, the sides each with a seven-character inscription written in archaic script, stopper. 7.1cm...
