Height 4.5 cm © Wartski The larger pomander is engraved with attributes of the goddess Venus including amorini, forget me nots and roses. These alternate between three panels engraved with gods: Mars with his helmet, shield and lance; his mother Juno with her attendant peacock; and Venus with a radiant heart in one hand and her own son Cupid in the other.... Pomander en argent. Espagne ou Italie, première moitié du XVIIe siècle. Photo Fraysse & Associés Modèle de forme octogonale à pans gravés d'enroulements et de fleurons sur fond guilloché. Ces derniers pivotent et sont agrémentés d'une petite plaque qui s'ouvre par un panneau coulissant. L'élément supérieur se visse pour maintenir l'ensemble fermé. Incense burner or pomander in the form of a lynx. Iran, late 12th - early 13th century. MTW1525. The Khalili collections © 2011 Khalili Family Trust This lynx seems to be pawing the ground, as if about to jump up and catch its prey on the wing, as is the habit of lynxes. The lines at the eyes indicate that the animal is smiling. The impracticality of using the tail as a handle and the inconvenience of replenishing the incense when it was full of hot coals make it more probable that this vessel was a pomander, filled...
