The carefully built up layers of hardened lacquer, the red colour of which is achieved by the adding of mercuric sulphide (cinnabar), are carved with patterns of writhing five-clawed dragons among clouds. Bonhams June Fine Asian Works of Art Sales in San Francisco bring over $5.5 million

A fine huanghuali and burlwood table. The single rectangular-sectioned floating panel of intricately figured burlwood surrounded by framing members with elegantly tapered ice-plate edges supported by a tall waist above simply rendered aprons with beaded edges buttressed by large 'giant's arm braces' atop gently inwardly curving hoof-form feet, the elements other than the burlwood floating top panel comprised of huanghuali wood of honey hue with a grain of attractive whorl. 22 1/2 x 32 x 43in (57 x 81 x 109cm).
