Lady Stewart and Lord Wedgwood

3

Martha Stewart is introducing her first line of fine china this month, the Martha Stewart Collection With Wedgwood. Many of the patterns, some of them shown at left, were inspired by pieces in her personal collection. How big is Martha Stewart’s collection of china, you wonder? Let us put it this way: If you have to ask, you don’t have the space for it. Though, actually, neither does Martha. She estimated the number of sets she owns as “in the hundreds” — and judging from her cheery tone, she has not been infected by the current outbreak of consumer guilt. “I have a huge collection in my house in Maine, a huge collection in Bedford. The overflow goes into the Martha Stewart Living prop house.” Much of it, she added, came from garage and estate sales. “Even Lord Wedgwood, when he came to my house, admired it,” Ms. Stewart said. “He said I had things he didn’t have in his collection.” Hold on: there is an actual Wedgwood person? “Oh, yes. Very handsome, very elegant. He came to my TV show in a bright pink tie.” Cut to Lord Wedgwood, whose first name is Piers, and whose family has been in retail since 1759. He called Ms. Stewart an extraordinary lady who really knows her subject and said she “very definitely” had Wedgwood pieces that he did not own. Did she give him anything? “She actually didn’t, but most of us collectors don’t give anything away — we work too hard to get them,” Lord Wedgwood said. “But maybe you should suggest that to her.” The Martha Stewart Collection With Wedgwood is $99 to $159 for a five-piece setting; available in mid- December at macysweddingchannel .com and in Macy’s stores early next year.
