Au moment du Salon du Dessin au printemps 2009, Sotheby’s proposera pour la première fois à Paris une vente entièrement consacrée au dessin. La maison est heureuse d’inaugurer ce premier rendez-vous avec la prestigieuse collection Robert Lebel réunissant 170 dessins du XVIe au XIXe siècle, estimés 1.1 à 1.6 millions €.

To coincide with the Salon du Dessin in Spring 2009, Sotheby’s Paris will stage its first-ever sale devoted exclusively to drawings, and is delighted to mark this debut by offering the prestigious Robert Lebel Collection of 170 drawings spanning the 16th–19th centuries, with an overall estimate of €1.1-1.6 million.

Robert Lebel (1901-1986) fut un esprit indépendant, atypique, difficile sinon impossible à classer. Essayiste, romancier, historien de l’art, érudit, collectionneur, il fut l’ami d’André Breton, le premier biographe de Marcel Duchamp, le proche de Max Ernst et de Jacques Lacan. Exilé à New York pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il y fréquenta assidûment Breton, Matta, Ernst, Tanguy ainsi que le grand ethnologue Claude Lévi-Strauss. Ils découvrirent ensemble l’art amérindien, eskimo en particulier, alors très méconnu. Parallèlement, à son retour en France, il exerça le métier d’expert en tableaux anciens et collaborera avec plusieurs études prestigieuses, dont celle de Maurice Rheims. C’est à l’Hôtel Drouot en 2006 qu’a été dispersée, sous le marteau de Cyrille Cohen, sa collection de masques eskimo. Aujourd’hui, Sotheby’s met en vente sa superbe collection de dessins anciens.

Robert Lebel (1901-86) was a highly independent and atypical figure, difficult if not impossible to classify. He was at the same time essayist, novelist, art historian, erudite collector, Marcel Duchamp's first biographer, a friend of André Breton, and close to Max Ernst and Jacques Lacan. During his years in exile in New York during World War II, he assiduously frequented Breton, Matta, Ernst, Tanguy and the great ethnologist Claude Lévi-Strauss. Together they discovered Amerindian art, especially Eskimo art, then little-known. Back in France Robert Lebel worked as an expert in Old Master paintings for several prominent auctioneers, notably Maurice Rheims. His collection of Eskimo masks was sold at Drouot in 2006 under the gavel of Cyrille Cohen. Now his superb collection of Old Master drawings is to be offered at Sotheby’s.

Le coeur de la collection de dessins anciens fait la part belle aux oeuvres italiennes et renferme plusieurs chefs-d’oeuvre de la Renaissance. Le plus attendu sera sans doute l’Etude pour la Madone au long cou du Francesco Mazzola dit Le Parmesan (1503-1540), dessin préparatoire au célèbre tableau conservé au musée des Offices à Florence (estimation : 500.000/700.000 €). Parmesan, influencé par Corrège mais aussi par Raphaël, est un dessinateur-né dont les oeuvres ont connu en France une faveur particulière. La pièce maîtresse, proposée pour la première fois sur le marché, est sans conteste l’une des plus belles versions qui attirera l’enthousiasme des plus grands collectionneurs du monde entier.

The heart of the collection consists of Italian drawings, and includes several Renaissance masterpieces. The most eagerly awaited of these is likely to be a Study for the Madonna with the Long Neck by Francesco Mazzola, more commonly known as Parmigianino (1503-40). This is a preparatory drawing for the famous painting in Florence's Uffizi Gallery (estimate €500,000-700,000). Parmigianino, who was influenced by both Corregio and Raphaël, was a born draughtsman whose works have always been especially popular in France. This Madonna Study, now appearing on the market for the first time, is unquestionably one of the finest versions and is sure to catch the eye of leading collectors from around the world.

Autres pièces rares, l’étude de personnages par le collaborateur de Raphaël, Perino del Vaga (estimation : 50.000/70.000 €), le projet de frise pour le Castel Sant'Angelo de Pellegrino Tibaldi (estimation : 50.000/70.000 €) et celui pour le décor de la Sala Paolina au Vatican du grand peintre florentin Giorgio Vasari (estimation : 80.000/120.000 € - illustration ci-dessus). Un lien profond existe entre ces artistes qui est sans aucun doute la prééminence accordée à l’art du dessin dans la création artistique.

Other rare works include a Figure Study by Raphaël's assistant Perino del Vaga (est. €50,000/70,000); Pellegrino Tibaldi's Project for a Frieze for the Castel Sant'Angelo (est. €50,000/70,000); and a design for the decoration of the Sala Paolina in the Vatican by the great Florentine artist Giorgio Vasari (est. €80,000/120,000 - see ill. above.). All these artists are united by the importance they attached to the art of drawing in their artistic creation.

L’école vénitienne est représentée avec des oeuvres caractéristiques de deux grands coloristes, très appréciés dès le XVIIIe siècle en France, Tintoret, Etude d’hommes tirant une flèche pour le tableau Le Rapt d’Hélène conservé au musée du Prado à Madrid (estimation : 20.000/25.000 €) et de Palma Il Giovane, Etude préparatoire pour L’Age de fer au Palazzo Ducale à Mantoue (estimation : 10.000/12.000 €).

The Venetian School is represented by characteristic works by two great colourists, popular in France since the 18th century: Tintoretto, with a Study of Archers for his Rape of Helen in the Prado (est. €20,000-25,000); and Palma Il Giovane, with a preparatory study for his painting The Iron Age in Mantua's Palazzo Ducale (est. €10,000-12,000).

L’autre point fort de la collection est le fonds de dessins français classiques comme Claude Vignon, Cléopâtre estimé 40.000 à 60.000 € (illustration ci-dessus), Gabriel de Saint Aubin ou le grand Nicolas Poussin. Citons l’émouvante étude de personnages autour d’un lit par Nicolas Poussin provenant des collections Frédéric Reiset et Chennevières (estimation : 80.000/120.00 €), et le paysage poétique par Claude Gellée dit Le Lorrain (estimation : 8.000/12.000 €).

The collection's other strong-point is its array of classical French drawings by artists such as Claude Vignon, with Cleopatra (est. €40,000-60,000 — see ill. above.); Gabriel de Saint-Aubin; the great Nicolas Poussin, with a moving study of figures around a bed, from the Frédéric Reiset and Chennevières Collections (est. €80,000-120,000); and a Poetic Landscape by Claude Gellée, better known as Claude Lorrain (est. €8,000-12,000).

Les écoles du Nord sont enfin représentées par l’élégant dessin maniériste de Hendrick Goltzius représentant Vénus ordonnant à l’Amour de percer de ses flèches le coeur de Pluton (estimation : 60.000/80.000 € - illustration ci-dessus).

The Northern School, meanwhile, is represented by an elegant Mannerist drawing by Hendrick Goltzius: Venus Appeals to Cupid to Make Pluto Fall in Love (est. €60,000/80,000 - see ill above.).

Les dessins du XIXe siècle, moins nombreux, complètent remarquablement la collection. On peut citer plusieurs belles feuilles de la première moitié du siècle, notamment une Etude de têtes de femmes de la période bruxelloise de Jacques-Louis David (estimation : 10.000/15.000 €), une puissante aquarelle d'Eugène Delacroix, Profil de femme (estimation : 20.000/30.000 €) ou études de personnages d’après Goya : prêtre et moine bénissant la foule /étude de rose (estimation : 10.000/15.000 € - illustration ci-dessus). Plusieurs beaux dessins et aquarelles par S. Redmond Granville, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux ou Galien Laloue ajoutent un charme incontestable à cet ensemble.

The collection's 19th century drawings are fewer in number but of remarkable quality. Among some splendid works from the first half of the century are a Study of Female Heads from Jacques-Louis David's Brussels period (est. €10,000-15,000); a powerful Female Profile in watercolour by Eugène Delacroix (est. €20,000-30,000), along with his Studies of Figures after Goya: Priest & Monk Blessing the Crowd / Rose Study (est. €10,000/15,000 - see ill. above.). Fine drawings and watercolours by S. Redmond Granville, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux and Galien-Laloue add to the ensemble's appeal.
