Bethany Krull’s intricate sculptures in both porcelain and bronze reveal her reverence and fascination with the complexity and diversity of nature.

WEST PALM BEACH, FL.- The annual Resident Artist Exhibition at The Armory Art Center opens on Friday, April 24, 2009. This year’s exhibition is titled, Emergence: The Resident Artist Exhibition and runs through May 15. The Artist-in-Residence will exhibit new work created during their residency. There work will be displayed in Montgomery Hall on site at The Armory Art Center.

The highly competitive resident program attracts a diverse group of people with varied backgrounds. This year’s emerging artists explore contemporary ideas in a variety of mediums through sculpture, installation, and pottery. The exhibition will include sculptural and functional work by two ceramic residents and both sculptural and figurative work by two sculpture residents.

The 2008 through 2009 Armory Art Center resident artists are Jesse Walp, Misty Gamble, Bethany Krull and Daniel Ricardo Teran.

Jesse Walp’s sculpture explores the concept of freedom and the roles it plays in our lives. Referencing historical means of control and humiliation, he creates work, which resonates with social concern, irony, and traces of humor. With his current work of life-size figures accompanied by medieval bronze weapons and restraints, a dialogue unfolds suggesting revolutionary events and overturning of power. Misty Gamble’s work is inspired by the human figure and its infinite capacity for communication. Gamble’s current work of ceramic figurative sculptures, focuses attention on issues surrounding femininity and set standards of normalcy, propriety and societal expectation while challenging conventional standards of beauty. Daniel Ricardo Teran is an artist currently working and living in West Palm Beach, Florida. His aim, as a maker, is to create functional pots that allow the viewer to slow down, stop, and enjoy the many idiosyncrasies and issues raised by every work he creates. Bethany Krull’s intricate sculptures in both porcelain and bronze reveal her reverence and fascination with the complexity and diversity of nature. Stemming from her belief that our society is becoming increasingly disconnected from nature, her work aims to raise questions regarding our own species “ideas of nature” and how these ideas intersect when viewed with in the contexts of science, art, and religion. Manifestations of Nature, an installation of her extensive collection of natural objects, which in Krull’s words “can be seen as the embodiment of all three of these realms” will be on display along with her current body of sculpture which aims to present nature as an entity to be worshipped.
