Amor Pazzo“ and „Medea“ are after the frescoes formerly in the vault of the Salone of the Villa Lante in Rome by Guilio Romano, who also was the architect of the villa. designated: “nach Giulio Romano”; hand painted passepartout and originally framed, 41 x 56 cm. Price on application

The nine gouaches by Michelangelo Maestri incorporate motifs from the recently discovered Antique room decorations at Pompeii and Herculaneum o rare based on designs by Raphael or his pupil Giulio Romano. They were immensely popular and were acquired in large numbers by northern Europeans on their Grand Tour. Some of the following gouaches were owned by H. R. H. Luitpolt in Bayern (1821-1912) in Possenhofen Castle in Bavaria. The owner’s mark is on the back-side of four gouaches. It is not known, when Duke Luitpolt acquired them. He and his father King Ludwig I. von Bayern were important collectors of art and antiques. The following gouaches can be classified in a collection of three mythological scenes and three pairs which belong together.

Two guaches on carton, with vitrification and frame, each with 40 x 52 cm. The gouaches show two allegories in the manner of Pompeian wall paintings. Alate cupids trail a golden carriage with Venus and the alate Amor in a chariot is tailed by mythical creatures. Price on application

Michelangelo Maestri (circa 1779 – circa 1812, Rome) incorporate in his paintings motifs from the antique room decorations at Pompeii and Herculaneum, but they are also based on designs by Raphael(Urbino 1483 – 1520 Rome) or his pupil Giulio Romano (Rome 1499 – 1546 Mantua). They were immensely popular and were acquired in large numbers by northern Europeans on their Grand Tour.
