Splendid gems, all symbols of love, take centre stage at the Bonhams Hong Kong Fine Jewellery and Jadeite Auction on 23 November.

A symbol of love and immortality, rubies possess an inextinguishable inner fire which has been the subject of many myths and legends throughout the centuries, while the vivacious red is said to bless wearers with wealth, good health and wisdom.

Among the diverse range of jewellery being offered are two exquisite rings, their fiery stones with superb hue and quality associated with divine power. Lot 1053 is a 3.01 carats rare unheated Burmese 'Pigeon's Blood' ruby and diamond ring estimated at HK$840,000 - 1,160,000. The ruby possesses a colour and quality that is impressive, while its contemporary design lends to its beauty. Lot 1052, another ruby and diamond ring, features an unheated vibrant red Burmese ruby, of 6.00 carats, within a timeless setting of diamonds and is estimated to fetch between HK$1,030,000 - 1,300,000.

Centring on a cushion-shaped ruby, weighing 3.01 carats, within a marquise-cut diamond surround, to a reverse set with brilliant-cut diamonds, mounted in platinum, the diamonds estimated to weigh approximately 2.23 carats in total, ring size 4¾. EstimateHK$ 840,000 - 1.2 million / US$ 110,000 - 150,000 0 £67,000 - 93,000

Accompanied by a certificate from the Gem Research Swiss Lab stating that the 3.01 carat ruby is natural vivid red (GRS type "pigeon's blood"), has no indications of thermal treatment and originates from Burma (Myanmar). Report number GRS2011-101949, dated 25 Oct 2011

The oval mixed-cut ruby, weighing 6.00 carats, within a brilliant-cut diamond surround, to shoulders set with three rows of similarly-cut diamonds, the diamonds estimated to weigh approximately 1.00 carats in total, ring size 5½. EstimateHK$ 1 million - 1.3 million / US$ 130,000 - 170,000 / £82,000 - 100,000

Accompanied by a certificate from the SSEF Swiss Gemmological Institute stating that the 6.00 carat ruby is natural red colour, with no indications of heating and originates from Burma (Myanmar). Report number 59924, dated 16 Jun 2011

Known as the 'royal gem', sapphires possess a deep blue colour, symbolising truth, sincerity, faithfulness and everlasting love. Above all, sapphires are known for the protection they are said to provide. Lot 1055 is a 23.45 carat sapphire and diamond ring. The Burmese gem is unheated and its exceptional deep blue colour and notable clarity as well as its classical style contribute to its rareness and beauty. The ring is estimated at HK$4,080,000 - 5,000,000.

The oval mixed-cut sapphire, weighing 23.45 carats, flanked by bullet-cut diamonds, mounted in platinum, the diamonds estimated to weigh approximately 1.40 carats in total, ring size 6. Estimate: HK$ 4.1 million - 5 million / US$ 530,000 - 650,000 / £330,000 - 400,000

Accompanied by a certificate from Gübelin Gemlab stating that the 23.45 carat sapphire is natural blue colour, with no indications of heating and originates from Burma (Myanmar). Report number 11055295, dated 31 May 2011

Diamonds are a universal symbol of love and synonymous with power, brilliance, strength and incomparable beauty. A highlight of the sale is Lot 1054, a sparkling 5.03 carats diamond ring of D colour and internally flawless clarity, estimate at HK$2,680,000 – 3,000,000. Last, but definitely not the least, is Lot 1056, a magnificent 14.28 carat natural light pink diamond ring. Most pink diamonds present a colour modifier such as brown, orange or purple, but this particular diamond is graded light pink by GIA, which makes it especially rare. The gem is identified by Gubelin Gem Lab as a Type IIa diamond, with a clarity grade of VVS1. This impressive diamond is estimated to fetch between HK$6,100,000 – 7,300,000.

The oval brilliant-cut diamond, weighing 5.03 carats, to brilliant-cut diamond-set shoulders, mounted in 18k white gold, the remaining diamonds estimated to weigh approximately 0.35 carats in total, ring size 6¾. EstimateHK$ 2.7 million - 3 million / US$ 350,000 - 390,000 / £210,000 - 240,000.

Accompanied by a certificate from the Gemological Institute of America stating that the 5.03 carat diamond is D colour and IF clarity. Report number 1102449616, dated 8 Dec 2008

The pear-shaped diamond, weighing 14.28 carats, within a three-claw setting, mounted in platinum, sizing band within hoop, ring size 6¼. Estimate: HK$ 6.1 million - 7.3 million / US$ 790,000 - 940,000 / £490,000 - 580,000

Accompanied by a certificate from Gübelin stating that the diamond is Fancy Light Pink, natural colour, VVS1 clarity. There is an appendix to this certificate stating that the diamond is Type IIa. Certificate number 0502106, dated 22 Feb 2005
