Embroidered Dragon Robe. China, 19th century.
Informal robe of a Chinese woman. Calf length garment of dark blue silk with front over-flap closing to the right. Fastened with four loop-and-ball toggle buttons made of corded silk. Square wide sleeves with no cuffs. Neck opening and hem with edgings of contrasting off-white silk. Decoration consists of two front facing dragons in the middle front and back with six more side facing dragons on the shoulders and the bottom and four smaller dragons in a wide bottom border. Embroidered cloud bands, flowers and bats are scattered around the dragons. Terrestrial landscape at bottom. The design executed in silk embroidery and couched metallic thread. Edging embroidered with figures in a garden setting. Lined with plain light blue silk. LENGTH: 4 ft. 10 in. (147 cm). HEIGHT: 34 in. (86 cm).
