Notes: This tavern scene, which repeats the composition of Adraien van Ostade's work of 1666 in the Musée Fabre, Montpellier, has been attributed to the young Cornelis Dusart by Dr. Bernhard Schnackenburg. During his formative years Dusart, who entered the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke in 1679, frequently reproduced works painted by his teacher Ostade, whose compositions he reimagined in a slightly subtler palette. After Ostade's death in 1685, Dusart took over the older master's studio, completing unfinished works and undertaking his own projects, in which his versatility as a draftsman are evident. In 1692, Dusart served as Dean of the Guild of St. Luke. His impressive collection, which included works from the Van Ostade estate as well as examples by Bega, Berckheyde, Van de Velde, and others, was auctioned in Haarlem after his death in 1708.
