The lifetime jade collection of John A. Campbell, M.D. of Akron, Ohio breaks estimations at Aspire Auctions

Double sided carved jade screen. one side show a carved mountain landscape with two large trees sheltering a house and it's owner, the left and upper corner have a plum tree. The reverse side shows a river in the center with a solitary bridge with a traveler, the lower center has a sampan with figure; on the right is a boy riding a water buffalo. Ornate carved wood base with wood inlay in cloud shapes. Plaque measures 4-1/2" x 6-1/4"W x 1/2"D. In stand; 9"T x 8"W x 2⅞"D

Beautifully carved pale lavender jade with overtones of green, burner with three legs each having carved face on the knee, large ornate dragon heads at either side with rings, and a lid having an adult foo dog with pup, set into carved wood base. 6½"T without base x 7½"W x 5"D

Purchased in Miyanoshita in 1970. With certificate from K. Mitani, Secretary of Tokyo Art Club, dated September 16th, 1945.

Carved jade, with open work, on carved wood base. Hand of Buddha citron spillover with flowers blooming on the front and rear. The stems and leaves are modeled from the bottom of the plant upwards and to the sides. Mutton fat in color, the carving is an excellent example of a gentle breeze. 5"T x 2⅞"W x 2"D

Note: John A. Campbell, M.D. of Akron, Ohio,  member of the Cleveland Art Museum, he enjoyed a long-time friendship with Mr. Ho and Sherman Lee. He taught an adult education class on Japanese and Chinese art at Akron University and was on the Advisory Board of the College of Fine and Professional Arts at Kent State University.

Many of the scrolls in this collection are documented with accompanying correspondence between Dr. Campbell and well-known London based Japanese art dealer David Newman. His collection included porcelains, scrolls and jades. 

Otherwise, in the Asian sale, a Rare Pair of Carved Jade Cricket Cages, Qianlong Period, 1736-1795 made six times the maximum estimate.

Carved mutton fat jade, one with grey striation, cylindrical and hollow cages with reticulated carving throughout depicting pagoda and pine trees on rock formations, with figures, the flat base of carved green jade carved with key fret, the slightly domed caps with open-carved work of leaves also with key fret on edge. 8¾"T each

Authenticated in 1970 by professor Na Chih-liang, jade curator of the National Palace Museum in Taipei, while on loan for exhibition to the Mint Museum of Charlotte NC.

Formerly of the Volkert Collection, purchased from Ashkenazie & Co. in 1975. Receipts and appraisal available.
