Art Nouveau pendant 'Poppies’. Horn, silk and coloured glass, 10 x 5.8 cm. Signed 'GIP' for Georges Pierre, France, circa 1910© TEFAF Maastricht, 2015

This elegant pendant, wholly Art Nouveau in style and conception, is made from carved buffalo horn with coloured glass and horn beads. The practice of making Art Nouveau jewels from horn began in 1896 and reached its peak in the first decade of the twentieth century. As this pendant shows, nature was the principal source of inspiration. Georges Pierre and Elisabeth Bonté, who were active in Oyonnax, France, concentrated on working with horn. They made horn pendants on silk cords, decorated with glass beads.

Provenance: Private collection
