well potted with soft rounded sides resting on a low splayed foot, covered with a rich layer of creamy-white slip and a glossy transparent with shallow rounded sides rising from short foot to a gently everted rim, the interior finely carved with a medallion enclosing a large lotus pad and bloom borne on undulating stems issuing curling leaves, the base faintly incised with a circular swirl, applied overall save for the unglazed rim with a transparent creamy-white glaze pooling in tears on the exterior

NoteA dish of similar size and decoration, but with a plain rim, was sold at Christie’s London, 8th December 1986, lot 232, and again in our New York rooms, 23rd March 2011, lot 513, as part of a private collection of Song ceramics. A Dingyao lotus dish from the Pilkington Collection, similarly carved with lotus, but with a foliate rim, was recently sold in these rooms, 6th April 2016, lot 1.
