Lot 593. A large carved and moulded Yaozhou celadon 'Peony' bowl, Northern Song dynasty (960-1127); 21 cm, 8 1/4  in. Estimate 250,000 — 300,000 HKD. Lot sold 525,000 HKD. © Sotheby's.

of deep conical form supported on a low foot, moulded to the interior with seven blossoming peony sprays wreathed in dense foliage, detailed with finely combed petals and leaves, the exterior crisply carved with large leafy flower sprays, applied overall save for the foot and a ring on the base with an olive-green glaze, the glaze pooling to a darker tone in the recesses.

Provenance: Tai Sing Fine Antiques Ltd., Hong Kong, 18th July 2001
Property from the Xinyangtang Collection.
Exhibited: Chugoku meito ten: Chugoku toji 2000-nen no seika [Exhibition of Chinese Pottery: Two Thousand Years of Chinese Ceramics], Tokyo, 1992, pl. 21.

Note: It is extremely rare to find Yaozhou bowls that are decorated overall, with the design on the inside completely filling all available space, right up to the rim, and with decoration also on the outside which is usually plain. Typically, Yaozhou bowls are decorated on the interior only. The designs were either carved with a knife, moulded, combed, or applied at an angle.
The present bowl is particularly interesting as it demonstrates a combination of the aforementioned styles. The floral scroll composition is being impressed on the interior while being carved on the exterior, then detailed with combed petals and leaves simulating the veins and texture.
