the shallow rounded sides rising from a short foot, finely painted in cobalt blue with the 'heaping and piling' effect, the interior with a medallion enclosing a central peony surrounded by peony and lotus blooms amongst meandering leafy branches, encircled by a composite floral scroll below a classic scroll band at the rim, separated by two double circles, the exterior with a similar floral scroll between bands of key fret and classic scrolls, the base inscribed with a seal mark in undeglaze blue.

Provenance: Acquired in Shanghai or Tianjin in the 1930s by a British gentleman in the tobacco industry, by repute.
