Lot 496. A large sancai glazed earthenware Bactrian camel, Tang dynasty (618-907); H. 56 cm. Sold: €3,600 (Est: €4,000 - €6,000). © Nagel
Provenance: Collection of Adalbert Colsman (1886-1978) and Thilda Colsman, bought from N. V. Nederlandsch.-Aziatische Handelmaatschappij, 27th January, 1930, by descent within the family to the present owner.
Note: Despite Camels not being native to China, portrayals of the two-humped camel are commonly found in Chinese tomb sculpture. The Bactrian camel was useful for carrying goods on the Silk Road between China and the West.
