Sotheby’s is proud to present ROMA a selling exhibition by the French photographer Julien Drach (b.1973). Dedicated to the Eternal City, this body of work began in 2018, during an artist residency at the French Academy, the Villa Medici, the spectacular mannerist villa in the heart of Rome. The villa’s melancholic interior, together with the endless historical layers of the city, had a huge impact on Julien, who kept returning to the city to wander and explore it. His intention was, as it is across all his work, to shed light on the obscure, sometimes invisible part of reality, enabling the viewer to rediscover the poetical power of his subjects, in this case, the fascinating fabric of the Eternal City. Born into a family of actors and directors, and himself trained in these métiers, Julien Drach’s work blends the boundaries between cinema, painting and photography and is a direct reflection of his upbringing.

His works have been exhibited in Paris and abroad and can be found in numerous private collections, ROMA being his first exhibition in the United Kingdom. Julien Drach also collaborates with prestigious international magazines such as PURPLE, CABANA, Architectural Digest Italy and France, Vanity Fair as well as collaborating with internationally renowned interior designers.

The exhibition will be concurrent with the third edition of the STONE sale, an auction dedicated to marble, hardstones and micromosaics. The sale showcases an incredible array of colours and the rich use of these materials in Decorative Arts, with a special link to Rome, as no other city in the world had such a special relationship with marbles and hardstones.
