Ru ware Brush Washer, Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127)

Brush Washer, Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). Glazed stoneware (Ru ware), 3.4 × 13 cm. Gift of Major General and Mrs. William Crozier, 1944. Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1944-20-95a,b.

Inscribed on the base (translated):

The Song imperial kiln for making celadons was established at Ruzhou. It is said that powdered agate was used to make the glaze. However, nowadays, this method is not used at Jingdezhen. It also produced a precious blue color on the surface.
Composed by the Qianlong emperor in the cyclical year of Yihai (AD 1755)

The rarity and quiet elegance of Ru ware makes it one of the most sought after of all Song dynasty (960–1279) ceramics. So revered were Ru pieces that they were collected and appreciated by later emperors. On the base of this piece is a poetic inscription by the Qianlong emperor who ruled from 1736 to 1795.
