Teabowl with Phoenix and Tortoiseshell Glaze, Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279)
Teabowl with Phoenix and Tortoiseshell Glaze, Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). Glazed stoneware with paper-cut decoration on interior and tortoise-shell glaze on exterior (Jizhou ware), 12.1 cm. Purchased with the East Asian Art Revolving Fund, 2013. Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2013-23-1.
The Jizhou kilns are known for producing the most technically creative types of decoration during the twelfth to thirteenth centuries. To achieve the interior phoenix design of this teabowl, the Jizhou potters employed an innovative technique of paper-cut stencils, which they fixed to the interior before applying glaze.
