Incense burner, Ming dynasty (1368–1644), Zhengde reign, dated 1512. Stoneware with relief decoration under colored glazes. H. 43.5 cm (without lid); W. 33 cm. Gift of Mrs. Harry Payne Bingham, 1962, 62.101.1. © 2000–2024 The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Writhing dragons weave through the dense leaves of a central flowering peony on this extravagantly sculpted stoneware censer. Vividly colored with lead glazes fired at lower temperatures, this vessel reflects advances in Ming-dynasty ceramic technology. The brilliant new color palette was used for palace and temple building materials as well as for sculptures and ceremonial vessels.
