Bleus et Blancs de Chine à la Foire TEFAF Maastrich 2008
An Imperial porcelain blue and white 'meiping' - Height 42.5 cm - Six character Jiajing mark on the shoulder - China, Jiajing period (1522-1566) - Chez Blitz Chinese Ceramics & Works of Art (stand n°280)
Blue and white porcelain ‘Pronk’ basin. Height 35.5 cm. Diameter 66 cm - China, circa 1740.
This Chine de Commande basin was made especially for the Dutch market. The shape is based on European silver example, which were either used to cool wine bottles or to rinse glasses. Especially the lappet borders -around the rim and foot- are moulded and painted to resemble the silver original. The decoration on the exterior, of a scene with swans and reeds, is stylistically identical to other Chinese porcelain objects designed by Cornelis Pronk (1691-1759). In 1734 he was appointed by the VOC to make designs which were sent to the far east to be copied on Chinese and Japanese porcelain. VOC archives tell us that Pronk made four drawings over a period of three and a half years. The first one is that of The Parasol Lady, the second one is The Four Doctors, and the fourth drawing is The Arbour. The third design is unknown and no records have been found so far. - Chez Vanderven & Vanderven Oriental Art (stand N°102)
