A rare pair of wucai 'dragon' bowls and covers. Yongzheng six-character marks and of the period

Each of almost conical form raised on a straight foot, the exterior painted in underglaze-blue with two writhing five-clawed dragons emerging from turbulent waters, the details on the dragons, flaming pearls, fire and clouds rendered in green, red, yellow, aubergine and black enamels, the design repeated on the cover, the mouth rim and rim of the cover formed with six evenly spaced notches, the base inscribed with six-character mark in three columns within a double circle, paper and silk stands. 20.2cm (7 3/4in) diam. (6). Sold for HK$504,000

Provenance:  An English private collection

An identical pair of bowls in the collection of the Nanjing Museum is illustrated in Qing Imperial Porcelain of the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong Reigns, Hong Kong, 1995, no. 52; a single bowl in the British Museum is illustrated by R.L. Hobson in The Later Ceramic Wares of China, London, 1924, pl. LV, fig 1.
