Coupe et son couvercle en vermeil par Johann Adam Kienlin le Vieux, Ulm, vers 1660

Sur pied circulaire à contours, repoussé de cupules, le fût en forme de tronc d'arbre avec un bûcheron et sa hache, la coupe en forme de grappe de raisin, en rappel sur le couvercle terminé par une prise en angelot portant une bannière gravée, l'intérieur portant une inscription, poinçons sur le pied et sur le corps. Engraved: L'inscription sur la bannière est gravée "GÿCKH UND SEGEN HEÿ UND LEBEN WOLLE GOTT HERRN EKERN GEBERN" soit chance et bénédiction salut et vie que dieu l'accorde [à la famille] Ekern.
L'intérieur du couvercle porte l'inscription "MUNUS HOC NUPTIALE CARISSIMO DNO ECKERO AFFINI DULCISSIMO CUM OMNIGNAE FELICITATIS VOTO OFFERUNT GEORG FRID:WAGNER D.SÿNDIC GEORG FRID:WALLISSER ARCHIGRAM JOHAN ERSNT LEDERER D.PHÿSIC", soit Georg Frideric Wagner, Georg Frideric Wallisser et Johan Ernst Lederer présentent ce cadeau de mariage à leur très cher Lord Ecker avec une prière pour son bonheur.

Notes: Cette coupe est un cadeau de mariage offert par trois membres éminents de la ville d'Esslingen, comme l'atteste l'inscription gravée dans le couvercle. Johann Eberhardt Eckher est né le 27 janvier 1635 à Tubingen; il y étudie le droit et la philosophie avant de s'installer à Esslingen en 1661 où il épouse Rosina Essig. Il occupe plusieurs postes municipaux officiels avant de devenir maire de la ville en 1692 où il décède en 1707.
Johann Adam Kielin le Vieux fut un orfèvre prolifique qui réutilisait comme beaucoup d'orfèvres certains de ses moules et ornements. Ainsi le fût de la coupe appelée "Hansel dans la cave" est similaire à la prise de notre coupe (voir E. Maus, Goldschmiedkunst in Ulm, Ulm, 1990, p.62-63).
Ces coupes ont longtemps été décrites à tort comme des "coupes ananas", cependant les chercheurs s'accordent aujourd'hui à les décrire comme des coupes en grappe de raisin ou Traubenpokal. En effet, ces coupes ont été faites bien avant l'apparition de l'ananas, importé en Europe à partir des années 1640. (H. Newman, An illustrated dictionnary of silverware, Londres, 1987, p. 240).

On shaped circular lobed foot, the stem shaped as a tree trunk with woodchopper, the grape-shaped bowl and cover with angel finial holding an engraved banner, the interior of the cover with inscription, marked on base and body

The inscription on the banner is 'GÿCKH UND SEGEN HEÿ UND LEBEN WOLLE GOTT HERRN EKERN GEBERN' which translates as Luck and Benediction Salvation and Life God grants it to [the] Ekern [family].
The inscription in the cover is 'MUNUS HOC NUPTIALE CARISSIMO DNO ECKERO AFFINI DULCISSIMO CUM OMNIGNAE FELICITATIS VOTO OFFERUNT GEORG FRID:WAGNER D.SÿNDIC GEORG FRID:WALLISSER ARCHIGRAM JOHAN ERSNT LEDERER D.PHÿSIC', which translates as Georg Frideric Wagner, Georg Frideric Wallisser and Johan Ernst Lederer present this wedding gift to their dearest Lord Ecker and wish him happiness.

This cup is the wedding gift from three prominent citizens of Esslingen as shown by the inscription engraved on the cover. Johann Eberhardt Eckher was born on 27th January 1635 in Tubingen where he studied law and philosophy before moving to Esslingen in 1661 and marrying Rosina Essig. He held several official positions in the town council before becoming mayor in 1692. He died in 1707.
Johann Adam Kielin the Elder was a very prolific goldsmith. It is interesting to note that the figure finial of the cup is identical to the stem of a 'Hansel im Keller'cup. (See E. Maus, Goldschmiedkunst in Ulm, Ulm, 1990, p. 62-63).
These cups have frequently been described as pineapple cups though most historians now agree on calling them grape-shaped cups or Traubenpokal since pineapples were only imported in Europe from the 1640s (H. Newman, An illustrated dictionary of silverware, London, 1987, p.240).
