Importante coupe de baptême en or par Hans Heinrich I Ziegler, Zurich, 1755

Sur piédouche à doucine bordé d'une frise de pampres de vigne en rappel sur l'ombilic, et d'un décor ciselé de cornes d'abondance, de rocaille et de treillage sur fond amati en rappel sur le fût et sur le bord de la coupe, le centre du bol appliqué d'un large médaillon émaillé vert et bleu portant une inscription et neuf écus représentant sept cantons et deux villes indépendantes, poinçons sur le pied et inscription K.20. Hauteur: 29 cm. (11 3/8 in.) Poids brut: 1448 gr. (51.05 oz.). Estimate €100,000 - €150,000

Notes: Le margrave Carl Friedrich von Baden-Durlach (1728-1811) monte sur le trône en 1746. Souverain éclairé, il encourage le développement des écoles et universités. En 1751 il épouse Caroline-Louise von Hessen-Darmstadt qui lui donne un fils, Carl Ludwig, le 14 février 1755. A sa demande écrite, sept cantons et deux villes associées (Berne, Zurich, Glarus, Schaffhausen, Saint Gallen, Appenzell et Bâle, Biel et Mulhouse) acceptent de devenir ses parrains et allouent en guise de cadeau 500 talers pour la fabrication de notre coupe qui sera livrée à Baden à l'automne 1755.

On domed spreading foot finely chased with a frieze of vine tendrils on matted ground with band of cornucopia, scrolls, shells and flowers with plain centre, the similarly chased stem with fluted knops, the exterior of the bowl chased with further rococo ornament, the centre set with a large green and blue enamelled medallion with the arms of seven Swiss cantons and those of the towns of Biel and Mulhouse and an inscription, marked on foot, stamped with K.20 incuse

The inscription reads 'MONU/MENTUM/HONORIS/M.DCC.LV' which translates as a token of esteem.

The Margrave Carl Friedrich von Baden-Durlach (1728-1811) ruled from 1746 and, as an enlightened sovereign, he encouraged the development of schools and universities. In 1751, he married Caroline-Louise von Hessen-Darmstadt. Their first son Carl Ludwig was born on 14th February 1755. At the Margrave's request, seven cantons and two associated cities (Bern, Zurich, Glarus, Schaffhausen, Saint Gallen, Appenzell, Basel, Biel and Mulhouse) accepted the role of godfather to Carl-Ludwig and allocated 500 talers for the making of this gold cup which was delivered to Baden in the autumn of 1755.
