Bonhams Fall salon jewelry and watches sale a starry success

SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- Bonhams auction of Salon Jewelry and Watches on September 19 in San Francisco brought more than $1.17 million, with star-studded lots from both Austrian-born actress Hedy Lamarr and the Estate of songwriter, composer, conductor and playwright Meredith Willson and his wife Rosemary. Proceeds from the Estate will benefit the Meredith and Rosemary Willson Charitable Foundation.

Property from the Collection of Hedy Lamarr sold marvelously, with a diamond, turquoise, ruby and cultured pearl pendant-brooch, sold for $11,875 (est. $3,000-5,000), headlining during the sale. Also from the Collection was a diamond and orange stone flower brooch, sold for $5,000 (est. $1,200-1,800); and a reverse painted rock crystal and diamond clip-brooch, sold for $2,750 (est. $800-1,200).

Property from the Estate of Meredith Willson and his wife Rosemary also brought great results, with such items on offer as a diamond bracelet, sold for $5,625 (est. $4,000-6,000); a diamond cluster ring, sold for $4,750 (est. $4,000-6,000); and a pair of diamond pendant earclips, sold for $4,375 (est. $3,000-4,000).

The auction featured a diverse collection of jewelry and accessories, and was highlighted by the sales of diamonds, which appeared all throughout the sale, according to a Specialist in the Jewelry Department at Bonhams in San Francisco, Deborah Boskin. Of the sale, Boskin said, “Jewelry purchases continue to be a focal point of affluent buyers, as indicated by the active bidding in both Los Angeles and San Francisco. Diamonds maintain their strength in sales, as do signed and period pieces.”

Top highlights included: earrings, such as a pair of cultured pearl and diamond earrings, sold for $32,500 (est. $2,000-3,000) and a pair of French diamond and eighteen karat gold earrings, sold for $8,750 (est. $2,000-3,000); necklaces, such as a carved coral bead and gold-plated necklace, sold for $13,750 (est. $800-1,200) and a carved emerald and diamond pendant with diamond chain, sold for $10,625 (est. $5,000-7,000); a diamond ring, sold for $8,750 (est. $3,000-5,000); bracelets, such as a diamond filigree bracelet, sold for $8,500 (est. $3,000-5,000) and a French enamel and diamond panther bangle bracelet, sold for $8,125 (est. $4,000-4,500); and accessories, such as a sapphire and diamond gentleman's dress set of cufflinks, four shirt studs and two collar buttons, sold for $9,375 (est. $1,500-2,500) and a fourteen karat gold mesh purse, sold for $8,125 (est. $4,500-6,500).

An enamel and diamond panther bangle bracelet, French; with French census mark; gross weight approximately: 151.4 grams; mounted in eighteen karat gold; length: 7 1/4in. (minor loss to enamel). Sold for US$8,125.

A sapphire and diamond gentleman's dress set comprising: a pair of cufflinks, four shirt studs and two collar buttons; collar buttons signed Boucheron, Paris, with French assay marks; mounted in eighteen karat white gold and platinum (one sapphire and one diamond deficient). Sold for US$9,375.

A fourteen karat gold mesh purse with openwork, engraved closure, sapphire cabochon push clasp and chain strap; weighing approximately: 250.2 grams; length: 5 5/8 x 5 3/4in. Sold for US$8,125.

The Salon auction was not the only sale to feature successful jewelry highlights at Bonhams in San Francisco on the 19th - the auction house also held its September SoMa Estate Auction on September 18th and 19th. Leading the jewelry section of the sale was a yellow sapphire, diamond and 18 karat gold ring, together with a pair of earrings, sold for $3,125 (est. $1,500-2,000).

A blue and yellow sapphire and diamond ring, oval-shaped blue sapphire weighing approximately: 4.10 carats; mounted in eighteen karat gold; size: 6 1/4. Sold for US$3,125.

Other top results from the SoMa auction included a 14k and 18k gold charm necklace together with a cultured pearl and 14k gold multi-strand bracelet, sold for $2,750 (est. $2,500-3,000); an 18k bicolor gold chain together with a 14k gold nugget pendant, sold for $2,750 (est. $2,000-3,000); a collection of three diamond, 18k and 14k bicolor gold rings, sold for $2,625 (est. $1,500-2,000); a ruby, diamond and 18k gold ring, sold for $2,750 (est. $1,500-2,500); a collection of four diamond and 18k gold rings, sold for $2,500 (est. $1,200-1,800); a collection of three 14k and 18k gold wristwatches, Omega, Bulova and Geneva, sold for $2,750 (est. $1,200-1,500) and a gold nugget and 14k gold money clip, sold for $2,750 (est. $1,500-1,800).
