Paolo Fiammingo (Antwerp 1540-1596 Venice), The Loves of the Gods. Ca. 1585. Oil on canvas. 119.6x166.7 cm. CHF 200 000 / 300 000. Photo courtesy Koller

Dutch painter Pauwels Franck’s museum-quality painting created circa 1585, “The Assembly of the Gods: The Loves of the Gods”, was discovered in a Swiss private collection in 2001. The Augsburg imperial banker Hans Fugger (1531-1598) was one of the painter’s largest commissioners; Fiammingo created the series of the Five Senses (1582/83) in Fugger’s castle in Kirchheim/Swabia. In his expertise, Dr. Andrew Martin, who discovered the painting in 2001, emphasises the parallels between that series and the painting now presented at Koller Auctions. The work depicts a gathering of the gods, with Jupiter, Vulcan, Neptune, Venus and Cupid before a river landscape; the pair of lovers and smaller group of figures located on the left were only recently revealed after a careful cleaning of the work. Due to its excellent quality, the painting is estimated at CHF 200 000 / 300 000 (lot 3030).

Albrecht Dürer – a milestone of European book art

1acd0764e014e97ce0652c152db7cd1fThe highlight of our forthcoming Books and Autographs sale is a Sammelband which uniquely presents the artist Albrecht Dürer as a scientist and comprises his entire German-language book production. The three treatises on mensuration (1525), fortification (1527) and human proportions (1528) reveal the wide scope of Dürer‘s efforts to establish a theoretical foundation through the works of his artistic practice and mark the beginning of the German scientific language. Moreover, they are considered milestones in European book art due to their composition and masterly coordination of typography and illustration. This unusually well-preserved copy comes from the renowned collection of the English architect and designer Charles Robert Ashbee (1863-1942), found its way into a Swiss private collection in the 1970s and is now being offered for the first time in nearly four decades, with an estimate of CHF 120 000 / 180 000 (lot 231).
