with deep rounded sides rising from a slightly tapered foot, the exterior subtly carved with overlapping petals with raised central ribs resembling a lotus flower, applied overall with a bluish-green glaze falling short above a neatly cut footring, the latter left unglazed revealing a smooth grey ware slightly burnt orange in the firing - 14.2 cm., 5 5/8  in.

NotesSee a similar bowl recovered from a pit in Shaanxi province together with a brazier dated to 1204, illustrated in the catalogue to the exhibition Ice and Green Clouds. Traditions of Chinese Celadons, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, 1987, cat. no. 76a, together with another bowl recovered from a Song dynasty well at Miaojiaqiao near Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, pl. 76b.

A closely related bowl was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 30th November 2011, lot 3007; a slighly larger one, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum. Porcelain of the Song Dynasty (II), Hong Kong, 1996, pl. 134; another was included in the exhibition Song Ceramics from the Hans Popper Collection, Eskenazi, London, 2005, and a third bowl was sold in our London rooms, 9th June 2004, lot 178.
