a) Large tea bowl (Annam chawan), titled "Big Wave" (Annan tetsu e nami chawan) on the lacquer box in gold lacquer. Stoneware, painted with cobalt blue under the finely crazed glaze. With vertical, slightly curved wall on a short foot ring. Outside with the typical wave pattern of early Vietnamese proto-porcelain. The glaze, apparently not completely melted in the fire, developed a velvety surface after many years of use. Lacquer repair at the lip. Inside spur marks. H 10.6cm, Ø 12.7cm. Violet shifuku silk bag.
b) Annam-style chawan with dragonflies and clouds. Japan. Mino, Ofuke (Gempin). Edo period. 17th century ferrous stoneware with crazed opaque white glaze. Underneath painted with cobalt blue. Hanzutsu form, cylindrical with a triangular lip, on a wide base. Brown tea deposits inside. H 7.1cm, Ø 10.8/11.2cm. Old gold lacquer repairs.
