Decorated in the tianqi technique, the rounded top and bottom engraved with peony scroll bearing seven large blossoms in red, ochre and green lacquer, with narrow key-fret borders at the rims, the engraved lines filled with gilding, the interior covered in ochre lacquer, with ruyi-shaped metal clasp and hinge.
Provenance: Acquired in Hong Kong in the 1950s, and thence by descent within the family.
Note: Necklace cases made of lacquer appear to be quite rare. However, examples in cloisonné of this same form are known. Compare the example sold in these rooms, 16-17 September 2010, lot 1031, where it was dated 17th century.
