Lot 349. German School, early 17th Century, Vanitas Still Life, inscribed lower center on stone ledge: ET SICVT IN ADAM OMNES MORIVNTVR / ITA ET IN CHRISTO OMNES VIVIFICABVNTVR / C[OR] ...oil on canvas ; canvas: 80.0 by 55.3 cm, framed: 99.7 by 118.7 91.4 by 65.4 cm. Estimate 20,000 - 30,000 USD. © Sotheby's 2024

Note: This intriguing vanitas still life can be associated with a group of three related paintings, each with slight compositional variations, previously attributed to the German artist Peter Binoit.1 Inscribed in latin along the lower edge of the composition, a biblical verse (1 Corinthians 15:22) echoes the sentiment of the vanitas iconography: "For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive."

1 For a discussion of the other three works, see G. Bott, Die Stillebenmaler Soreau, Binoit, Codino und Marell in Hanau und Frankfurt 1600-1650, Hanau 2001, pp. 56-58.
