MAKARA FINIAL
Deccan, late 17th century, 6cm long approx., Copper gilt, in the form of a makara with bulbous eyes, mouth agape and short stylised elephant’s trunk. £ 2200
The makara is one of the most enduring motifs in Indian Art: a mythical aquatic monster like a crocodile but with elephant trunk and a fish’s body, symbolizing water, the source of all existence and fertility. This exceptionally finely-made object is probably from a palanquin or piece of furniture. (all text & images © Millner Manolatos)
