"Marché Campo de' Fiori" par Mark Bittman
Campo de' Fiori, in Rome, was not the first great European market I visited, but it was among my favorites and remains so. What follows is a sampling of the (mostly local) vegetables I saw when I stopped by there last week. — Mark Bittman www.nytimes.com
Here, radicchio.
More radicchio, just as enticing, found among the gorgeous greens at the market that day.
Puntarelle, the best spring salad green there is (especially when it's dressed with anchovy vinaigrette, as it is throughout Italy). Note the screen-like gizmo used for separating the edible from inedible portion of the thick stems.
Some rather excellent early tomatoes.
A few decent-looking artichokes.
A man so enamored of his fancy peeling device, he couldn’t be bothered to talk to customers.
And a stroller traffic jam. (photos Mark Bittman)
