Portrait de Martin Luther, 1525, Bristol Museums & Art Gallery
"Pietà sous la Croix," 1510, Moravian Gallery, Brno
"Sainte Hélène" 1525, Cincinnati Art Museum
"Vénus", 1532, Städel Museum, Frankfurt
A selection of about 70 paintings and works on paper by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553), on loan from many different museums from Cincinnati to Brno, Czech Republic. As a court artist to the Saxon electors, the German Renaissance painter was prolific: portraits, devotional works, and ambiguously erotic female nudes in biblical (Eve) and mythological (Venus) scenes established his reputation. A friend of Martin Luther and a supporter of the Reformation, Cranach nevertheless accepted commissions from Catholic patrons (his interpretation of the Eve of the Old Testament has been an inspiration for modern and contemporary painters). Like Dürer, his contemporary, Cranach created engravings and woodcuts. The show ends with a portrait of the painter by his son. -- www.royalacademy.org.uk
