Strong results for Leslie Hindman Auctioneers’ October 4-5 Asian Works of Art auction
A Pair of Chinese Huanghuali Armchairs, sold for $122,000.
CHICAGO, IL.- Leslie Hindman Auctioneers’ October 4-5 Asian Works of Art auction continued to see strong results, driven by prices realized for traditional Chinese works bought by Mainland Chinese buyers. The two day sale drew a crowd to the Chicago auction room adding to the often overflowing bank of telephone bidders. The sale realized over $3.08 million against a low estimate of approximately $1.02 million.

Our Asian sales prove just how global the auction market has become, as international bidders enthusiastically competed on the internet, telephone and in the room to secure the top lots,” said Leslie Hindman, CEO and President.
The highlights of sale included a damaged 17th/18th century carved rhinoceros horn cup (lot 59) which sold for $292,000, a stained ivory and hardwood screen which brought $244,000 (lot 72), and a spinach jade brush washer which brought $97,600 (lot 96) and a pair of huanghuali armchairs at $122,000 (lot 64).

the cup of truncated form with a rectangular rim having a squared pouring spout and a strap handle with a climbing beast, the exterior having taotie style relief carving, raised upon a tapering squared base with key-fret border, the whole raised atop a carved wood stand of a flowering plant. Width of cup over handle 7 1/8 x height of cup 4 3/8 inches. Height with stand 7 7/8 inches. Having moderate wear throughout, with a break to the top of the handle repaired with a wood piece, having multiple fissures along the handle with small chips and scratches throughout, having a wood dowl inserted into the underside for attachment to the wood stand; also having a crack at one corner of the cup at the join of the handle at the top; the exterior of the cup florescing under UV light; the wood base having losses to some of the carved foliate decoration near the top. A Chinese Stained Ivory and Hardwood Screen,
the rectangular screen depicting a mountainous landscape surrounding a bay, the foreground depicting a scholar seated at a table on a porch next to a figure traversing a bridge with an attendant carrying a Go game board, set atop a painted backdrop of a blue sky, the screen having a glazed hardwood frame inset with ivory bats and characters, raised atop a heavily carved hardwood stand with scrolling foliate carving throughout. The item having moderate wear throughout, with scratching and wear throughout consistent with age, the main landscape panel having some repairs with inpainted areas to the flat reserve-mainly in the blue sky at top; the base having a loss on one side to half of a section depicting a bi at the center, as well as a loss to the veneer on the bottom of one of the feet on the exterior right side. Please note - the reverse of the main panel containing a lacquered and gilt scene of flying bats amongst scrolling clouds, heavily worn with crackle throughout the panel. Height 45 3/4 x width 33 1/4 inches. Estimate $ 10,000-20,000. Lot sold for: $244000
A Spinach Jade Lotus Form Brush Washer.
of spinach green stone with small black flecks throughout, the form of a large curled lotus pad with a blossom at the side, the naturalistic carving showing the stem of the plant curled over the side and running beneath the lotus, raised on a fitted hardwood stand pierce carved with lotus blossoms, pads and vines. Item in overall good condition having no visible damage or repairs; the base having light wear from age and use. Width of jade 13 inches. Estimate $ 1,000-2,000 - Lot Sold for: $97600

in the style of dingware, having key fret border on the galleried rim above a band of repetitive lingzhi fungus heads, the neck flanked by deer head handles, each with antlers and delicately holding a branch of lingzhi fungus in its mouth, the moulded body decorated with eighteen cranes amongst clusters of scrolling clouds with some holding branches of fruit, all above a border of crashing waves, the underside having six character Qianlong seal mark. A Rare and Important Carved Cinnabar Lacquer Treasure Box, Qing Dynasty.
comprised of four tiered compartments with hinged corners, each having carved decoration throughout with the staggered shelves separated by pierce carved screens of traditional motifs including dragons, cranes, bamboo and geometric designs, the surface of the shelves having black lacquer with gilt floral sprigs, the lower register of each shelf containing six rectangular panels depicting landscape scenes with the central panel attached to a single drawer, the whole raised atop a shaped apron and squat scrolled feet. The item having multiple repaired breaks and losses throughout, with some hairline cracks running through the rectangular carved landscape panels at the bottom register; one section having heavy damage to the top of the case having been repaired with the remaining pieces; the eye-loop hinges on the sides having been painted over with some sections of the hinges having been removed. One section having 8 losses to the scrolls at the ends of the feet, the second section with 1 loss to a foot scroll, the third section having consistent wear throughout and the fourth section having one loss to a foot scroll. Included in this genre were a number of 18th century snuff bottles, including an enameled Qianlong mark bottle which brought $51,240 (lot 39).
