As intriguing as it is menacing, this life-size Italian skull is carved of porphyry, one of the most precious stones in the world. Symbolizing life as well as death, this stunning piece is exceptionally detailed, from the fissures in the cranium to the missing teeth. A true momento mori, or reminder that death comes to all living things, this skull is a captivating treasure.
Porphyry (derived from the Greek word for purple) is an igneous rock conglomerate first used during the ancient Greek and Roman era. Imperial porphyry is incredibly rare and is only found in the eastern desert region of Egypt. A short revival of porphyry carving arose during the Renaissance, the stone known for its hardness and difficulty of working. To find a large work of such incredible detail carved of this regal stone is quite extraordinary. Excellent condition.
Skull symbolism is among the most complex and varied in the world. In Italy, skulls were used as an architectural motif on chapels and memorials, and throughout Europe, skulls served as a reminder of the fleetingness of time, vanity and earthly delights in art, drama and, of course, on timepieces.
