NoteCompare the very similar bowl from the Arthur M. Sackler Museum, Harvard University Art Museums, illustrated by R. Mowry in Hare's Fur, Tortoiseshell, and Partridge Feathers: Chinese Brown- and Black-Glazed Ceramics, 400-1400, Harvard University Art Museums, 1996, pp. 132-33, no. 31, where the author states that the white rim on bowls of this type was inspired by the silver bands affixed to Ding and other 'aristocratic' wares of the Song dynasty. The author further notes that this practice of imitating silver or gold bands on ceramic vessels began at least as early as the Han dynasty.
