This luxurious instrument had several functions. The left tympanum of the semicircular plate engraving shows the usage: A surveyor determines the height of a tower; on the scale of the semicircle, he could see the angle and so determine the amount. But the instrument could also be used as a compass and ruler. To connect to this unit beautiful and useful, rich ornament bears the preciousness bill, but decisive was the precision of the instrument.
