Height: 31.7cm

A large stoneware bottle vase with a high shouldered body sitting on a slightly flared foot and with a long neck with flared mouth rim and raised ring decoration where it joins the body. The entire piece is covered with slip and a translucent crackled glaze down to just above the foot-rim, revealing a grey stoneware body, and is typical of wares from the “Juluxian” kilns, Cixian, Hebei Province.

This form has its roots in Persian metalwork which influenced Northern Song Dynasty Ding wares and later, other Northern Chinese kilns. By adding a layer of slip over the grey clay body, the Cizhou potters mimicked earlier Ding output.

See examples of the same type, but of other forms in Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, Volume I. London, 1994. Pgs. 260-264.

Provenance: Private American Collection
