A Blue-Glazed Bowl, Mark and period of Yongzheng (1723-1735)

1

Lot 2908. A Blue-Glazed Bowl, Mark and period of Yongzheng (1723-1735); 17.2 cm., 6 3/4 in. Estimate 180,000 — 200,000 HKD. Lot sold 427,500 HKD (34,732 EUR). Courtesy Sotheby's 2008.

sturdily potted with steep gently flaring sides rising from an angle above a short straight foot, moulded around the lower body with two raised bowstrings, the exterior covered in a deep inky-blue glaze thinning at the rim and bowstrings, the interior and base glazed white, with the six-character mark inscribed on the interior within a double-circle.

NoteThe present bowl is possibly inspired by Ming dynasty Xuande bowls of related angled shape and flared rim; see a bowl unearthed from the Xuande stratum illustrated in Imperial Porcelain of the Yongle and Xuande Periods Excavated from the Site of the Ming Imperial Factory at Jingdezhen, Hong Kong, 1989, pl. 60. For a Qing dynasty example compare a Yongzheng blue-glazed bowl of this shape and size sold in our rooms, 27th April 2003, lot 166, with a cover and another a single blue-glazed bowl of this form sold in our rooms 31st October 1995, lot 421.
