Lot 228. A blue and white 'Venetian glass-inspired' twin-handled vase, Kangxi period (1662-1722); 7⅞ in. (20 cm.) high. Estimation : GBP 1,000 - 2,000. Price Realised: GBP 1000.00. © Christie's Images Ltd 2018
The vase has a tall neck flanked by elaborate openwork foliate handles and is decorated in vibrant shades of bright blue with a bold design of leafy flower blooms using cross-hatched shading techniques, below a band of birds perched on leafy stems encircling the neck.
Note: The vase is modelled after a European glass original whose form must have presented a technical challenge for the Chinese potters to copy.
A similar example is illustrated by R.Krahl and J.Ayers in Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, vol. 111, p.1019, plate 2181. Christie's London sold a pair of similar vases on 8 June 2004, lot 316.
