A rare blue and white baluster vase, Kangxi period (1662-1722)

A rare blue and white baluster vase, Kangxi period (1662-1722)

Lot 2546. A rare blue and white baluster vase, Kangxi period (1662-1722); 17 3/8 in. (44 cm) high. Estimate HKD 90,000 - HKD 120,000. Price realised HKD 112,500. © Christie's Image Ltd 2008

The slender body well painted with a continuous scene of figures at pleasurable pursuits in a setting of pavilions lining the banks of a lake detailed with boats, all below a bowstring band encircling the waisted neck, between scrolled and keyfret borders at the foot and mouth rim, with an apocryphal Chenghua mark to the base

Note: A vase painted with similar scenes obviously depicting the West Lake, as most of the buildings are identified by name, is illustrated in the Kangxi Porcelain Ware from the Shanghai Museum Collection, Hong Kong, 1998, pl. 55. The present vase is closely related to the the Shanghai example in its painting style.

Compare with a similar vase also bearing an apocryphal Chenghua mark dated to the Kangxi period sold at Christie's New York, 21 March 2002, lot 193.

Christie's. Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, Hong Kong, 3 December 2008
